Short answer

A Nova Scotia pay stub should clearly show gross pay, CPP contributions, EI premiums, federal income tax, Nova Scotia provincial income tax, and net pay. Nova Scotia workers are entitled to vacation pay and statutory holiday pay under the Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code. Minimum wage and entitlement rates are set provincially and updated — always check current rules with Nova Scotia Labour Standards.

Nova Scotia's Labour Standards Code sets out the rules for pay stubs, minimum wage, overtime, vacation pay, and stat holidays. If you work in Nova Scotia, your stub should clearly account for all earnings and deductions each pay period.

This page explains what to look for without quoting specific current rates. Nova Scotia has had recent changes to its minimum wage and other entitlements — confirm current figures at the Nova Scotia Labour Standards website.

Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code pay stub requirements

Nova Scotia's Labour Standards Code requires employers to provide a pay statement each pay period. It should include the pay period, wage rate, hours worked (for hourly workers), gross wages, each deduction and its reason, and net wages.

CPP, EI, and income tax in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia employees contribute to the federal CPP and EI programs. Both should appear clearly on your stub. Federal and Nova Scotia provincial income tax should appear as separate deductions — Nova Scotia uses a provincial TD1 form to set the withholding level for provincial tax.

Vacation pay in Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Labour Standards Code sets minimum vacation pay entitlements that vary by length of service. Current rates are published by Nova Scotia Labour Standards. Your stub should show vacation pay as either a periodic payment or an accruing balance.

Stat holidays and overtime in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia has a list of provincial holidays with entitlement and pay calculation rules set in the Labour Standards Code. Overtime is also calculated based on thresholds in the Code. Check Nova Scotia Labour Standards for current rules before reviewing your stub.

Common red flags worth checking

These do not automatically mean there is an error. They are simply lines worth a closer look, or worth asking payroll to explain.

Nova Scotia provincial tax line is missing

Both federal and Nova Scotia provincial income tax should appear as separate deductions on your stub.

Vacation pay absent

Nova Scotia workers are entitled to vacation pay. If it is not being paid out or accrued, raise this with your employer.

Net pay does not equal gross minus deductions

Total all listed deductions and subtract from gross. A discrepancy may indicate an unlisted deduction or calculation error.

Stat holiday pay missing

If a Nova Scotia provincial holiday fell in the pay period and you are eligible, stat pay should appear on the stub.

YTD totals reset mid-year

Year-to-date totals should only reset at calendar year start. A mid-year reset may indicate a payroll system issue.
